is hybrid publishing better than self-publishing?

I understand why busy entrepreneurs and business owners choose to go with hybrid publishers.

  • Reputation for creating high-quality books

  • Borrowing influence from being published by a publishing house

  • Saving you time because they help you manage the process of putting your book together

  • You keep your rights, unlike a traditional publisher

  • Help upload your book to Amazon & IngramSpark for you, deleting that overwhelm

But while they do those things, and give you that value, hybrid publishers DO NOT market for you.

Publishing houses make money from making a business agreement with a creator, the author.

Authors pay a fee to the publishing house to have their Word doc turned into a physical product.

It’s like when you have a design for a T-shirt. You pay a fee to the print shop who takes your design and turns it into T-shirts.

Sometimes the business model includes taking a cut of your book sales too.

But here’s why self-publishing gives you everything you get with hybrid publishing, and more:

  • High-performing entrepreneurs have high standards. They produce their services, courses, and products with high standards. That’s why they make high-quality books too. (Just ask any of our clients.)

  • High-performing entrepreneurs often have a network of friends, colleagues, and former clients with audiences and influence in their own right. Entrepreneurs who go on to become successful authors, like my client Amy, tap into their network and create more goodwill when they want to borrow influence.

  • Book marketing consultancies and agencies like Smokin’ Hot Books save authors time by helping them create the book they want. If you choose our done-for-you agency service, we handle the process of putting the book together for you.

  • You keep all rights as a self-publisher. You also own all deals you make with distribution networks, and you own all future deals you make with future corporate partners and collaborators. You own the sale price and any discount incentives. My sales coach Macy just sold 1,000 copies of her book in 1 sale with a corporate partner, and keeps all royalties, sales, and rights, without having to ask anyone permission.

  • Book marketing consultancies and agencies like Smokin’ Hot Books upload your book to Amazon & IngramSpark for you, giving you your peace. We also help you generate demand for your book via ads and podcasting, so you not only have global distribution, but also global DEMAND (like my client Ken, whose book is in the UK prison system now).

One of the bestselling books of all time is called You Squared.

You Squared, copyright Pritchett LP.

It has sold over 14 million copies.

(And it has less than 10,000 words, about 10 blog posts.)

The #1 bestselling personal finance book of all time is called Rich Dad Poor Dad.

It has sold probably over 10 million copies.

The #1 bestselling personal finance book in Canada is called The Wealthy Barber.

It has sold over 2 million copies.

Each of them, self-published.

Seems like self-publishing is good luck. :)
